Institutional Policies and Objectives

Three years after of the onset of the action of Iniciativa Amotocodie (IAM), the general objectives were reviewed and tailored to the current vision and mission of the institution, taking into account the path covered and current processes of crucial nature.

The revised objectives reflect

a) the expansion of IAM activities to the situation of the Ayoreo ethnic group as a whole

b) a deeper vision of the role of isolated groups without contact for the present world and modern society

c) a clear perception of the injustice suffered by the Ayoreo people due to the dispossession of their territories, and the need to return and develop new forms of coexistence with their ancestral land

Objectives

  • Objective I: Create conditions ensuring the integrity and the physical, spiritual and cultural survival and vitality of isolated groups, and the respect for their right to self-determination and the free exercise, before and after a future contact situation, of their protagonist role, important for all humanity.

  • Objective II: Achieve the protection of the integrity of the environment-habitat of the territories, both of those in use by the isolated groups, as well as the remaining parts of the territory of the Ayoreo ethnic group in the Northern Chaco. Pay special attention to the retrieval of dominion over the ancestral territory stolen from the Ayoreo tribe, as well as to the retrieval of legal possession of their land.

  • Objective III: Seek the cultural strengthening of the Ayoreo ethnic group, helping them understand their own history and reconnect with their ancestral territories; also, by helping them to define future life projects ensuring sustainable coexistence with the surrounding population as well as with the natural resources of their territories, and to retrieve their protagonist role with regard to their present life and future as an ethnic group, with regard to their living space and with regard to their role as part of humanity.

  • Objective IV: Achieve a protagonist role and conscious participation of the Ayoreo ethnic group in Paraguay, in the development processes that are menacing their environment-habitat, their physical integrity and their chances of survival. Wherever possible, mitigate or put an end to the effects of said processes, or transform them into positive processes.

  • Objective V: Foster the mutual integration of all the sectors involved in said processes, respecting each other’s diversity and their respective protagonist roles. For this purpose, wherever possible, encourage dialogue and mediation between conflicting and opposed interests.

  • Objective VI: Promote understanding of the significance of isolated forest groups and of the diversity they bring to the world today. Develop the teaching potential, for our modern societies, of the isolated Ayoreo groups and of Ayoreo culture as a whole. Inspired on the above potential, direct incentives for reflection and learning to target modern non-indigenous societies.
